EnLi Mcbeal XD

ok i know. lame title.=)

today was my first day at my attachment. went surprisingly well actually. was kinda apprehensive cuz of the general idea people get of lawyers; that they are mean and ruthless. Everyone was really nice to me today. Except for this one lady....aha.let me start from the beginning...

8.00 am

Got dressed, wore my HIGH HEEL STILETTOS. *if you guys see it you will freaking laugh i tell you* Got into car. Got a little freaked. Mustered my courage and walked up the steps of wisma UOA (opposite HELP, Oli. Lunch one of these days?) and joined the throng of professionals who work there. boy did i feel out of place or what.

Went up to the 8th floor and was astounded by the sheer grandeur of the reception. dont believe me? go check it out on the website. I was early as ppl ony start coming in at 8.30. so i sat down, stoned for a bit, then picked up this coffee table book "HSBC through the years" (i was actually wondering what the heck a book about a BANK was put there) but had fun rifling thru the pages.got history la..bla bla bla.

8.30 am

"You are..Miss Lim issit?" one short tiny lady asked. "ooh er. yeah! *smart enli, great display of vocab there* "ah ok ok.i need you to sign this...and thiss..and this is your card*omg i have a card?!*so that you have access to all our offices." what the heck?thought they only had one office! but yeah. turns out they take up 4 floors. 8, 9, 10, and half of 11.

and then.reality happened. *swipe* and the door opens to an entirely different world altogether. papers, files, papers, papers, weird linoleum floor, many many desks, many many tiny offices. basically a biiig biig difference from the law firms u see on the TVB shows. Ms. Juli (short tiny lady) took me around, talking VERY SOFTLY. i think she mustve thought i was deaf or something the way i kept on "the what?"ing her. Skrine is made out of more clerks and secretaries than lawyers. like huh? but it is true. i saw soo many clerks and it was actually very much like any other office. was a little dissapointed to tell u the truth.

The whole place is actually pretty confusing as it goes in a round; so if you continue walking, you actually get right back to where u started. and i tell you, each floor, each desk compartment looks the SAME. i got lost a BILLION times wei. when we got up to the 10th and 11th floors. *silence* whoa. damn quiet. this is when i saw the REAL lawyers. the chic, uber trendy lawyers. i took one look and was stunned. they all look as if they came out of the Economist or something man. and all of them look PERFECT wei. like those lawyers u see on TV.

anyways, moving on, was taken to see mr pradhan, my master.*im a..slave 4 u* haha no la. a master is like sort of the 'sifu' to the chambering students and attachees. he wasnt it. so i was regaled down to the library, where apparently all the chambering students hang out.so sat there.and waited. met a few chambering students, all very nice.

10.15 am

got a call from mr pradhan's office to go and see him. HAH. this is where i had my first mean encounter. i had to use my swipe card ryte. and then, just when i successfully swiped the darn card in, a lady opens the door. poor enli just stood there as she was about to open the door when the door opened. thus happened the usually u move right i move right, you move left i move left scenario. THEN, she BITCHILY said " will you MOVE and let me get out first?" poor poor me. i swear i turned red. i muttered a "sorry" and she click clacked off in her stilettos. PEH U WANNA FIGHT STILETTOS AR! I OSO GOT! hmph. yuck la.face oso damn bitchy. but i guess that's how it is in the work place.

met mr pradhan. very nice guy. asked me about my A-levels. he has this piercing stare which is very hard to hold. but i did it anyway. it didnt help that i was chewing gum at that moment. then came the awkward moment." so, you're family friends with the Kraals eh?" *choke* "er..well..we...er..my mom and aunty harbans work together in BNM, yeah." freaking hell he laughed wei. *shyness* and then he started talking about how nigels mom used to be a magistrate? or something like that. FAMILY FRIENDS?peh.

then i was told to go back down to the library to help dee wei, one of the chambering students with a case. i was like crap. dont know nuts about law and u want me to do what? well i was supposed to research the Limitations Act. pretty interesting actually. didnt know that claims made my plaintiffs have an expiry date of sorts.

1.00 pm

Much to my chagrin, today was the pupil-partner lunch * this is where the chambering students and the partners meet to discuss any problems that might arise during the period of chambering* i was like whyyy? must i go? and then the nutty bunch of chamber-ees (they call themselves that dont know why) sed i had to and i ALSO had to introduce myself.*argh* so i did. peh. embarassing. the chairman of the KL bar was there. *phew* scary. and he asked me if i wanted to follow him down to the KL bar to listen to a talk on criminal defense and human rights litigation. *coolness* so i agreed. it was scheduled to be at 3.30 so i had to find myself something to do again. dee wei was nowhere to be seen.

So, i went back to mr pradhan's office (who by the way, is a top arbitrator in the MAlaysian Law scene; wow. nigels mom must REALLY have helped cuz attachees (like me) usually get legal assistants as their masters. but i got a partnes *oo*) and asked him what to do. he brought me to meet Lee Shih, a new lawyer who would be going to court tomorrow. Lee Shih was to take me down to court to see what its like to do er..ar...court documentation? i think.more on that tomorrow. the rest of the time he was bitching about England and Ronaldo *world cup fever hits EVERYONE* and telling me what it was like to study law in the UK. funny fella. but nice=)

3.30 pm

went to meet the chairman of KL bar mr. lim chee wee. he drives a damn nice mercedes benz wei.*rich lawyers, i want to be!* he drove me down to the KL bar which is situated in wisma kraftangan (opposite masjid jamek LRT station). he brought me up to the Legal Aid office *this is the place where poor people go to get free legal advice* and he was such a NICE GUy!! he arranged for me to go to a criminal court hearing on thursday, which hears juvenile cases i think.=D

4.00 pm

sat for the talk on human rights and criminal defense. very interesting. to me la. but will not bore you with all the facts.met a lot of lawyers there, all of whom were very helpful and answered my questions.

6.30 pm

mr. lim sent me home, and during the journey back, he told me all the bad stuff and good stuff of being a lawyer. haha.im getting tired dy la. lazy to type. but basically he told me not to trust anyone as ppl out there in the world are bad. haha.he sounded like a father. i was like..ookkk...=)

all in all, it was a real good first day at work. i really learnt alot about the legal profession on one day than i ever would have in a classroom. relli thankful for this attachment.

unlike all the horror stories of bad days as an attachee to a law firm, mine was really really nice. whoopee. civil courts tomorrow. and probably high court on wednesday..then thurs court of appeals for the juveniles.yeay..
am starting to seriously like the thought of being a lawyer.

*en is not thinkin of the decision she has to make of kyuem*

* en is SO NOT thinking of her results, which probably is enuf to scare her all the way to KYUEM*
